About FlightScanner

Flight data is a major source of information on risks. However, with classic analysis tools, no one can browse the millions of pieces of information available. By comparing all flights, our machine learning algorithm will provide you with continuous and accurate measurements of your risks.

FlightScanner is the new standard for compliance and risk monitoring based on flight data. Indeed, new regulations require at least two things:

  • Monitor flight data against standard operating procedures. We propose to do it in a much more efficient way than classic FDM. You will be able to modify your thresholds in one click and will have access to extended analysis which could not previously be performed.
  • Identify hazards and assess risks. Until now, there has been no system that allowed this. Indeed to find the hazards and connect them to risks, the first thing to do is to measure the risks.

The risks are actually well known, but not systematically monitored. A metric is used for each risk, runway excursion, hard landing, take-off performance, etc. For example, the landing distance for each flight is compared to the actual runway length. Doing so, it is possible to separate flights with long and short landing distances.

The real innovation is that our machine learning algorithms are able to determine what the main parameters are between two information sets. This way, you know airport by airport, fleet by fleet what really affects your operations. And as the learning process is updated on a regular basis, you also discover trends and can really perform safety assurance based on data.

Why choosing FlightScanner?

Most of the information embedded in flight data remains unused. Flight Data Monitoring is a good way to verify that standards are applied however, it informs only on symptoms and not causes. The enhanced service based on risks actually provides underlying causes and points out the relevant parameters to review. It is, for example, possible to determine the exact value of some parameters above which risks increase.

Use case #1

With this statistical approach an operator realized that a large number of long landings were caused by a lack of braking by the flight crews. It revealed the origin of the risk and the operator could raise awareness among flight crews.

Use case #2

Some long landings were happening though approaches were stabilized. Through machine learning, it appeared that a less than 10 kt tailwind at 4,000 ft was the main contributor. Without the Big Data analysis, it would have been impossible to identify this hazard.

Use case #3

A hard landing occurred at a specific airport. Thanks to the statistical analysis of all flights to this airport, it was shown that the vertical profile explained this incident. It was used to talk with ATC about this type of approach and to convince them to modify their practices.

“How does it work?”

It is a learning process based on flight data. Initially, a database of historical flights is used to create the first indicators. Flights will first be classified in two groups, those that decelerate in one area, and those decelerating further in the other. Then a variable selection algorithm will use the different time series (altitude, airspeed, thrust, etc.) up to ten minutes before landing to recognize the patterns in parameters that have an influence on the runway excursion risk.

When some patterns are identified, the software computes “safe” profiles compared to higher risk profiles. This information is provided for all parameters identified as being hazards.

“Can it replace FDM?”

In a single process, the system provides two types of analysis: first it works as a classic FDM tool with flexible configuration of events and thresholds. At the same time, the analysis based on statistics provides levels of risk for each flight. In this way it works as both a compliance and risk monitoring system based on flight data. It is the most appropriate answer for the new requirements set by ICAO and EASA.

Data display: Like in a classic FDM program, you can visualize the flights and data through advanced displays which includes flight profiles, tabular data, and animation of flights. The monitored events are plotted on the flight trajectory and parameter graphs.

“Is any new equipment needed?”

This approach is based on exactly the same flight data as those processed during FDM (QAR). You do not need any new equipment, the service is run on dedicated servers and you access the results through a web browser. The confidentiality of the data is guaranteed with dedicated infrastructure and you can host the data within your IT system or you can decide to put it on our servers which meet the highest security standards.
